Marlene’s Legacy Scholarship
The Marlene’s Legacy Scholarship provides financial assistance to graduating high school seniors and undergraduate students in the Greater Kansas City area affected by lupus or lupus-related autoimmune diseases. The scholarship helps recipients pursue higher education, including college degrees, university programs, or accredited certifications.

Who is eligible
- Reside in the Greater Kansas City Area
- Be either a graduating high school senior or a current undergraduate student
- Have a minimum 2.5 GPA
- Demonstrate financial need
- Plan to attend a college or university, or a trade or vocational program
- Must be diagnosed with Lupus (Priority Consideration), diagnosed with a Lupus-Related Autoimmune Disease (such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sjögren’s Syndrome, Scleroderma, or Mixed Connective Tissue Disease), or have a biological parent, grandparent, or sibling diagnosed with one of these conditions
What you'll need
- Personal Statement (500 words / 1 page maximum): A typed narrative essay addressing 'How lupus or related autoimmune diseases have impacted your life or family', 'How education or training will help you achieve your goals', and 'Any volunteer or leadership roles, service awards, or recognition'. Must be double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font, with one-inch margins and name typed in the upper right-hand corner.
- Official High School Transcript (must include numerical GPA, an official signature, and be sealed by the school)
- College Letter of Acceptance
- Two letters of recommendation from non-family members (e.g. teachers, guidance counselors, school administrators, coaches, employers, ministers)
- Medical documentation of diagnosis (Lupus Diagnosis Letter from Physician or completed HIPAA Release Form)
- Disclaimer for scholarship funds disbursement signed by parent/guardian
- Copy of current year IRS Form 1040 (or previous year's if current is unavailable)
- Recipients must commit to completing 8 hours of community service per semester for one year with Marlene's Kaleidoscope or an approved organization
How to apply
- Collect all required documentation including the personal statement, transcript, letter of acceptance, financial information, physician diagnosis letter, and letters of recommendation.
- Complete the online application form on the Marlene's Kaleidoscope Foundation website.
- Upload the required documents in the upload section of the online form.
- Submit the completed application packet on or before the April 30th annual deadline.
