Scholarships for Black Men

Black Church men built Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the 19th century. By the 1970's, black men dwindled to a small minority at HBCUs; that trend persists today, dropping the student enrollment of men in proportion to the total to an all time low. You won't see many scholarships below — there genuinely are fewer men-tailored awards — but we appreciate them all. Will you give a scholarship?

The following is curated from our growing directory of scholarships for HBCU students. Each listing shows the award amount, deadline, and a direct link to apply.

~36%

of bachelor's degrees awarded to Black students go to Black men

17%

of Black bachelor's degrees are earned at HBCUs, even though HBCUs make up only 3% of colleges

70%+

of HBCU students qualify for need-based Pell Grants

Tips for Black men applying to scholarships

Cast a wide net. Awards for Black men come from everywhere — family foundations, professional associations, fraternities, HBCU alumni chapters, and corporate programs. Don't skip the smaller ones; a few $500 or $1,000 awards can cover books, housing, or a semester's fees.

Start early, but don't stop in spring. A lot of deadlines fall between January and April, but plenty of foundations accept applications year-round. We flag awards closing within 45 days so you don't miss the window.

Let your profile do the filtering. Create a free account and we'll score every scholarship against your GPA, state, major, and background — including awards specifically for men.
